Saturday 27, September 2008 - to 27-September-2008 Sustainable Solutions at St. Lawrence College
North Americans are in for some challenging times. The economic slow down is occurring at a time when oil is above $100/barrel, food prices are rapidly increasing and climate change is threatening so many of the systems on which we depend. The morning workshop will show you how to start making your own electricity with clean, green, renewable energy from the sun and wind. You'll learn how to save money by conserving electricity in your home, business or apartment and then how quickly an investment in solar and wind power can pay for itself. Since you can now sell your power back to the grid, there's never been a better time to invest in renewable energy. Learn how to assess your power requirements and what components you'll need to generate electricity with a clear conscience. This is a non-technical workshop that you do not need a background in electricity to attend. The afternoon workshop takes a closer look at how dwindling and expensive energy, the economic downturn and various other challenges will affect your life. With North American savings rates at an all time low, many families do not have the resources or a strategy to deal with these times. This is the "how to pay down your debt, buy a piece of property, build an off-grid home, start a vegetable garden and make yourself self-sufficient" part of the workshop. It's time to get motivated to deal with the coming challenges. This workshop will give you a framework to work from. This course will run from 9 am to 4 pm with a one hour break for lunch. For more information and to sign up for this workshop, please go to; (when Fall course information is available) http://www.sl.on.ca/parttime

Saturday 04, October 2008 - to 04-October-2008 Reducing Your Carbon Footprint with Solar and Wind
Once again, Cam will be back at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington for 2 half-day workshops. The morning one is entitled: Reducing Your Carbon Footprint with the Sun and Wind
The scientific community is warning that climate change poses a very real risk to the human species, and North Americans are the greatest contributors to the problem. We use huge amounts of energy that has a direct bearing on the health of the planet. This workshop addresses your energy use with the goal of reducing your carbon footprint. It begins with the easiest and least expensive ways to reduce energy use through efficiency. It then discusses how the sun's thermal or heat energy can be used to reduce your fossil fuel dependence. Finally it shows how the use of solar and wind power can pay you back while reducing your impact on the earth. The workshop also addresses personal transportation and modifications you can make with an eye to your pocketbook and to future generations. This is a non-technical, fun and motivating workshop designed to inspire you to tread lightly on the planet, while enjoying the sunshine along the way! In the afternoon, the presentation is called; Strategies for Thriving During Challenging Times Oil at $100/barrel is one of many indications that the world is reaching its capacity to produce cheap energy that has provided us with such a great lifestyle. At the same time Canadian savings rates are at all time lows, the US Dollar is sliding, water and food supplies are strained, global climate change poses real challenges... something has to give. This is the why and how to "pay down your debt, buy a piece of property, build an off-grid home, start a vegetable garden and make yourself self-sufficient" workshop. It's time to get motivated to deal with the coming challenges. This workshop will give you a framework to work from.
These workshops are held in the beautiful surroundings of the Royal Botanical Gardens and are well attended. To register, go to the link below and scroll about halfway down the page; http://www.rbg.ca/pages/publicprogram.html
